Supervise the EO/IR System Development Section, Design, which performs development, test, and evaluation of electro-optical systems in support of multiple APL business areas and transitions the systems to industry. Duties: Section supervision: lead and supervise a section of 6 professional staff, interact with program or technical leads for tasks, development and prioritization of tasks, staff development, and performance appraisals.
Technical: lead and contribute to the aforementioned technical task areas of the section, as well as to group tasks outside the section. Example tasks include EO/IR countermeasures, day/night imaging, and precision geolocation using laser ranging, inertial instrumentation, and GPS. New business: Support or lead the development of new instrument concepts and prototypes for applications spanning multiple APL business areas. Develop and market proposals to both external and internal customers. Group management: support task planning, strategic planning, capital and facility planning, and coordination of assignments across the group. Document task results via memoranda, briefings, conference proceedings, and journal articles.

Requirements |
Required: B.S. degree in physics, electrical engineering, optics, or equivalent.
At least 8 years of experience in at least one of the following: developing imaging, spectroscopic, or laser instruments for scientific applications, developing EO/IR/laser equipment for military applications, or developing subsystems for any of the aforementioned applications, e.g. optical or opto-mechanical design, pointing and tracking systems, inertial systems, embedded software controllers, etc. Demonstrated skill at leading small (3-5 people) technical teams. Aptitude for systems engineering across multiple disciplines to develop prototype EO/IR systems.
Desired: M.S. degree in physics, electrical engineering, optics, or equivalent. At least 15 years of experience in three or more of the following: developing imaging, spectroscopic, or laser instruments for scientific applications, developing EO/IR/laser equipment for military applications, or developing subsystems for any of the aforementioned applications, e.g. optical or opto-mechanical design, pointing and tracking systems, inertial systems, embedded software controllers, etc. Experienced at working across multiple APL business areas. Experienced with sponsor and contractor interactions, especially in transitioning new instrument concepts and prototypes to industry.
